Camera Obscura
Branding identity for B/W cinema

This project involves the branding of a fictional cinema dedicated exclusively to black-and-white films.
The name Camera Obscura, meaning “dark room” in Latin, is derived from the optical device that served as a precursor to photography. The project addresses the current lack of diversity in screening environments, where the depth and density of black-and-white films are often reduced to streaming experiences on small personal devices. Recognizing the need for a setting that enables viewers to fully engage with films composed solely of light and sound, the brand identity was developed to compensate for the limitations of contemporary cinemas.

Branding

The visual system draws from the motif of the  inverted image produced by the camera obscura, which inspired the project’s title. Additional references include early cinematic and photographic apparatuses such as the praxinoscope and other pre-cinematic techniques, forming the basis for the graphic development.
